Books for middle years

When I found out I'd be teaching in the middle years (in either grades 3 or 4), I immediately started to put together some books that I could read to my class. I picked up these books from an op (thrift) shop. They came in handy during the year, especially Roal Dahl and Andy Griffiths. I was surprised that both had some bits I needed to not read out (words like "brat" and "stupid") as I didn't want those words floating around my classroom.
Here are a few:
  • Charlie and the Chocolate Factory - Roal Dahl (great story- many already knew the movies)
  • The Twits - Roal Dahl (good for descriptions)
  • Just annoying and Just crazy - Andy Griffiths (hilarious short stories - you may need to cut some rude bits out). Boys love the topics and the fact that they are mostly about the author "Andy".
  • Where's Wally? - always a popular choice during reading time.
I also borrowed a whole bunch of books from the school library to keep in the classroom. I didn't worry too much about kids reading easier/harder levels as I was just happy to see them reading.

What are your top picks for classroom books?
